A Basketball Coach In A Football State by Donald Foy Scott documents his thirty-three years as a basketball coach in Texas.  The book discusses problems that arose between Coach Scott and his athletic directors who were football coaches.  The book is much more than that.  It describes small town Texas in the late 50's and 60's.  There are some big cities stories through the 90's.  Coach also coached football, taught biology, driver education and physical education.  This is not your normal jock book. The never before told unbelievable story is entertaining and informative.  This is not a declaration against football. Coach played football in high school  and was an effective football coach during his career. He enjoyed coaching football.

Coach Scott retired in 1990 after coaching in Beeville, Churchill (San Antonio) and Randolph Air Force Base High School. He is presently living on a ranch in the Texas Hill Country.  Basketball coaching friends have encouraged him to write his story. They have had similar experiences with their athletic director football coach.

Cover pictures are avaliable on Facebook.  Ordering information follows:

$20.00 covers all costs and tax.  Send check and your return address to Donald Foy Scott-PO Box 475-Llano TX 76643.

All coaches and sports fans will want to read this unusual and inside story of a basketball coach in Texas.

Coaches:

Below is information for teachers needing cheap graduate credit to move over on the pay scale.  Please forward to interested colleagues.  All coursework done from home!!

Point Guard College Clinic

The Point Guard College curriculum features courses for athletes and coaches that are designed to teach players how to train effectively, play smart basketball, become "coaches on the court," and demonstrate leadership during games, practices and in everyday life. Participants receive a university-style educational experience, including:

    • Classroom Learning Sessions - You will need a notebook and pen to take full advantage of PGC.
    • Video Analysis - You will study actual game footage to see examples-both good and bad-of every aspect of the game. These in-depth study sessions will help you learn to play-and watch-basketball in a more intelligent way.
  • Court Time Designed To Reinforce Good Habits - PGC's gym sessions are designed to turn the concepts that are taught in the classroom into productive action on the court. At PGC, we never "just roll out the basketballs and let 'em play." Each moment of every court session is carefully planned to maximize learning. A unique set of drills and game situations are used to build physical and mental habits that lead to smart, effective play.
  • Training in Leadership and Communication Skills - Special players positively impact the work ethic, focus and effort of their teammates. At Point Guard College we will teach you how to get your teammates to work harder, work together, overcome adversity, and succeed in the long term.

The clinic is not just for point guards.  The skills taught at the clinic are for any player that is interested in elevating their game.  The clinic is not for the recreational player as it is an intense program with both classroom and court time.  This is for high school players only.

If you are not familiar with PGC, I have copied some of their web site information and listed their website link below.

If you should have any questions, please feel free to email or call me.

 Last Year's Grads Included:

  • 3 Division One All-Americans
  • 250 College Players
  • 200 High School Coaches
  • 2800 High School Players

Athletes who attend PGC courses return to their programs with:

  • An enhanced understanding of how to play and think the game
  • Practical leadership skills which will make you a 'coach on the court'
  • A heightened inner confidence
  • A renewed joy for the game
  • Tools for individual off-season training
  • A notebook full of strategies for on-court and off-court success

Point Guard College is an intense, no-nonsense learning experience for high school and college playersmale and female and coaches. Not your typical basketball camp, PGC is called a "college" for a reason.

The Point Guard College curriculum features three distinct courses for athletes and coaches that have been specifically designed to teach players to train effectively, play the game intelligently, to be “coaches on the court”, and to be leaders during games, in practices and in everyday life.

Participants receive a collegiate-style education, which includes:

Classroom Learning Sessions:  You will need a notebook and pen to take full advantage of PGC.  Two to three times a day you will attend classroom sessions and will be expected to listen attentively, take notes and ask questions in order to deepen your understanding of the game.

Daily Video Analysis:  You will study actual game footage to see examples—both good and bad - of every aspect of the game.  This in-depth analysis will help you learn to watch—and play—basketball in a more intelligent way.

Court Time Designed To Reinforce Good Habits:  The gym sessions are designed to turn concepts taught in the classroom into productive action on the court.  A unique set of drills and game situations are used to build physical and mental habits that lead to smart, effective play.

Development of Communication and Leadership Skills:  Special players have the opportunity to positively impact the work ethic, focus and effort of their teammates.  Point Guard College will teach you how to get your teammates to work harder, to work together, to overcome adversity, and to succeed in the long term.

Alan Driggers

Class 1A State Champions

We have established a Tribute to Kenneth Cleveland area on Facebook. We urge everyone, not just former players, to join the group and share about themselves and memories of Kenneth and the Bobcats.

And...

Libby Cleveland is working on a book of remembrances about Kenneth: Pride, Poise and Pumpkin Bread. Folks with submissions for the book should get those in as soon as possible. E-mail them to me at BKBJONES@aol.com  and I will be sure Libby gets them. Libby plans to have the book published as soon as this summer.

Can you help spread the word at the state tournament? Thanks!

Below you will find information on two surveys from the Josephson Institute Center for Public Service Ethics, and their Pursuing Victory With Honor Program.

Please distribute this information to your members and also to as many coaches, athletes and parents as you can. We would like to get as many responses from
Texas as possible in this survey.

I hope you’ve read about the two new online sports surveys we’ve posted. One is for coaches and parents at:

 http://budurl.com/CoachAdParAssessment

and another for athletes at:

 http://budurl.com/AthletesAssessment

I think both surveys will stimulate meaningful thought as well as generate valuable research data.

I’m hoping you will help us get broad participation from
Texas coaches and athletes.

Many other sports groups are helping by urging their member to take the survey in their communications and I’m hoping you will do so as well.

If you have questions or need additional information, please contact me.
