Please make plans now to
participate in Coaches vs. Cancer. Each month we will include some of
the ideas sent in by schools who participated last year. You can make
it as simple or complex as you want, but please participate.
WHAT TO DO NOW:
1) Select
when you want to focus on Coaches vs. Cancer (game, week, tournament,
season, etc.) Put it on your schedule or school calendar.
2) Determine
who will participate with you (girls and boys, opponent, school
organizations, other sports, entire school, etc.). Begin organizing all
who will participate.
3) Pick
the activities you will use to raise money (fundraiser, contests,
sponsors, etc). Order any materials you need (t-shirts, wrist bands,
etc.)
IDEAS - We will start with the simplest and get more
complex each week. The easiest way to participate is to have a
collection jar at the admission table at the door or pass a container
(basketball cut in half, bucket, etc.) during the warm-up. If all of
our member schools passed the “hat” one time and collected $30 we could
donate over $50,000 to the fight against cancer. At least 4 other
states collected that amount or more. We sent in our $30,000 but would
like to send more in 2008-09. If each school collected money at several
games or your tournament, the totals can go even higher.
Some ideas from
last year by our members:
1) Get a sponsor to donate prizes. Many
schools raffle off the prizes after selling tickets. Some gave fans an
opportunity to shoot a free throw in order to win. One school sold pink
pieces of paper to make into a paper airplane. The airplanes were
thrown onto the court at halftime. Closest to the center circle wins a
prize.
2) Sell paper “bricks” to players, fans
or parents and put their name on the “brick” and put them on a wall in
the gym. Their theme was “build a wall against cancer”. The wall grew
throughout the season.
3) Some schools had a competition between
clubs and sports with the winner being recognized at a basketball game
and given a pizza party afterwards hosted by the basketball team. Other
schools had the boys and girls compete with each other or combine for a
fund raiser.
The
number of ideas is limitless. You can develop a tradition and have the
same activity each year or use a different one each season. It is up to
you. Just do it! (MORE TO COME IN FUTURE NEWSLETTERS!) DO NOT SEND
MONEY TO TABC - All donations will go to the American Cancer
Society. (Local or national office).
